What Results Can You Expect?
Schools & Districts
Participating schools and districts receive a report of their own local results which are confidential. Visit our School & District Reports page for additional information.
Counties
Once statewide surveying is complete, reports for counties are posted on our website. Visit our County Reports page for additional information and to access these reports.
Statewide
The statewide IYS reports is made available in the spring following administration. Visit our State Reports page to access reports and for additional information.
Confidentiality and Anonymity
There are multiple safeguards in place to ensure that student anonymity and school confidentiality are maintained during data collection and in reporting.
- School and district results are shared only with individual schools and districts. Reports are organized by grade level and present data in aggregate
- The IYS survey is anonymous and collects no individual identifiers that would link data to specific students. IP addresses are not collected. School and grade level information is collected for reporting purposes only.
- For report types that are available publicly, reporting requirements must be met to ensure the confidentiality of individual school and district data.
Survey Validity
With all self-report surveys, there is a possibility that respondents may not be truthful in their answers. Data collection procedures address survey limitations as much as is practicable and collected data is cleaned for consistency and accuracy.

Fake Drug Use
- Respondents must answer that they have used the fake drug on 0 occasions
Honesty Question
- Respondents must answer that they were honest at least some of the time on a 5-point scale
Partial Completion
- Respondents must answer at least 40% of the survey, excluding demographic questions
Perhaps one of the most important things a school can do to ensure validity is to follow the survey administration instructions. The instructions highlight ways to make students comfortable with the survey process and that their answers are anonymous.
Missing and Inconsistent Data

- For estimated percentages or frequencies, we exclude respondents with missing data from both the numerator and denominator.
- We cross-validate inconsistent survey responses between past month and past year use in calculated variables.
